April 2009

Kurt Thurmaier Professor Kurt Thurmaier has accepted the position of Director of the Division of Public Administration, succeeding Professor Gerald Gabris. Thurmaier brings experience from the University of Kansas and MPA director at Iowa State University, as well as service as Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Political Science. He has been very active in the strategic planning process, spearheading the emerging NGO Leadership & Development (NGOLD) initiative and other projects. Thurmaier's position will begin August 1, 2009, and will run until May 31, 2014.

College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Dean Chris McCord said, “I know that Kurt has received strong support from you, his colleagues, for the position. I am confident that he will continue to build on the strengths of your unit and sustain the collegial and positive attitude that you have created. I'd like to extend my thanks to Kurt for stepping forward to take on this key role.” Dean McCord added, “I'd also like to extend my thanks to Jerry for all of his contributions to the division as director. I hope you'll all join me in congratulating him on a job well done.”

Political Science Department Chair Chris Jones commented, “I want to congratulate Jerry on nearing the completion of his successful term as the director of the Division of Public Administration and Kurt on his new appointment. I appreciate Jerry's many contributions and his concerted effort to sustain a collegial and productive working relationship with me and the Department. In addition, I look forward to working with Kurt as I approach the fourth year of my term as department chair. Kurt and I know one another well from his service as POLS director of graduate studies and our collaboration on other administrative projects. So I am confident that the good communication and strong cooperation between Political Science and Public Administration present during Jerry's term will continue under Kurt's leadership. Best wishes to Jerry and Kurt.”
